It’s been a while since Heston has made an appearance on my blog, this is largely due to the fact that I now live nowhere near a Waitrose. I was also verging on Heston overkill so a break from him was no bad thing.
I was looking forward to trying the salmon as it came highly recommended (from John Williamson and Elizabeth Bacon if you’re interested), but also slightly wary as previous Heston products had names with promise but fell short on flavour. The duck and sour cherry sausages lacked sour cherry, the vanilla bacon lacked vanilla so the salmon could well lack Lapsang Souchong.
I cut open the pack, peeled off some salmon and inhaled a reassuring smokey aroma – would it be a Lapasang smoke or generic smoked salmon smoke? The suspense was killing me! Not for long though as I shoveled some in and got a great whack of Lapdog Shoesnog. It’s harsher than normal smoked salmon with bitter notes. At first it was overwhelming and I thought Heston had committed the sin of over smoking, but after the initial blast it mellowed and gave way to melting soft smoked salmon. This was a triumph for Heston where the unusual and the mainstream met with splendid results, it was also a triumph for John Williamson and Elizabeth Bacon – your recommendation was well placed, I look forward to your next one.
